Custom Gopro

The traditional Gopro is a product of beauty. After 10 revisions, Gopro has developed a mature product for action sports fans everywhere. The thing about having a mature product though, is that you cannot provide for the individual needs of all of its users. One such group is drone pilots, who value takeoff weight over reliability and robustness. Because I am an avid FPV drone pilot myself, I designed my own version of the Gopro in Solidworks using existing GoPro internals for a lightweight but reliable, robust, and aesthetic GoPro. This project is heavily inspired by the community that developed the original “naked GoPro”. The entire project completion required less than 24 hours including print time.

Anti-Jello mounts for common drone: Flywoo LR, GepRC Rocket

An off the shelf GoPro 7 is 116grams. I was able to create a functional GoPro7 at 56grams.

Gopro 7 with noncritical components removed. This is the foundation of the project.

The exterior design required 5 iterations. The design showcases rib reinforcement and tight tolerances to fit the existing GoPro PCB, allowing a robust shell while maintaining minimum weight.

The custom GoPro is powered off any standard lipo battery used for FPV drone flying. Another use case for this project is time-lapse photography thanks to the extended battery capacities found in FPV lips.

The camera mounts to standard Gopro peripherals so you maintain compatibility with your entire GoPro ecosystem.

This button is fully functional and power-ons the GoPro to begin 4k video recording.
